The best event trends of 2020

Whether it concerns the fashion, the music, or even the food industry, each year brings its share of new trends — and event planning is no exception. To help you plan a unforgettable event, we prepared a quick guide of our favourite event trends of 2020.

Colourful wedding decoration, vibrant ideas based on 2020 trends.

GO BOLD OR GO HOME

Last year, pastel colours were everywhere, but in 2020, vibrant colours are dominating trends. Don’t hesitate to go bold with vibrant, saturated, and even fluorescent tones. Create a rich and punchy colour palette, and apply it to the furniture, the tables, the decorations, the flowers, and the invitations.

For brides and grooms, it’s the perfect occasion to jazz up the traditionnal white gown or suit with a pop of colour!

To add a touch of whimsy to your event, we love colourful paper lanterns – the more the better. (Added bonus: they ’re an eco-friendly alternative to balloons!)

ONE WORD: CUSTOMIZATION

We’ve entered the era of customization and the possibilities are endless. A memorable night – whether it’s a corporate event or a wedding – always has tons of personality. Your imagination is the only limit when it comes to giving your event a unique DNA!

Make the space yours by dressing it up in your brand’s visual identity. Go for unique entertainment that feels on-brand for you and that will stay on people’s minds, whether it’s circus artists, a cartoonist, or a karaoke performance. Offer guests unique, customized party favours that they won’t find anywhere else.

In short: it’s about going the extra mile to make your guests feel like a million bucks.

360° VIDEOBOOTH: CREATING MEMORIES

Photobooths and videobooths have been overwhelmingly popular for many years now at office parties, weddings, corporate events, and fundraisers alike. In 2020, a new player is joining in and we’re already predicting it’s going to be a game changer!

Have you eagerly watched every single episode of Révolution? Then this trend is right up your alley. It’s a new twist on the classic videobooth: rather than simply posing in front of the camera, this technology films guests from every angle at a time, resulting in a short, fun, and unique video. It’s a great way to capture the atmosphere of the night!

Our very own in-house event planner, Emmanuel Goubard, tested Montreal-based Lebooth.ca’s 360° videobooth and we’re big fans!

FOOD: GO OFF THE BEATEN PATHS

In 2020, forget about stuffy dinners and pretentious banquets. The 2020 trend gives the edge to culinary adventures in a more casual, fun atmosphere!

Offer your guests a unique culinary experience. Get inspired by cuisines from around the world, notably by street food delicacies from different countries: Vietnamese Bánh mì, Mexican Tacos, or Thai satay all make for terrific finger food. You could also set up an original food station serving your favourite dish: mac and cheese, sushi, oysters, ice cream… Possibilities are endless!

Another fun idea: set up a food truck outside, in front of the venue, just like this couple who used it to serve a fun cocktail during their wedding at Entrepôts Dominion.

THE BIGGEST TREND OF 2020: ECO-FRIENDLY EVENTS

By far, the hottest trend of 2020 thus far is the environment. It might sound funny, but at a time when we’re more than ever aware of the consequences of our choices on the environment, it’s no joke. Planning any event often comes with a bunch of not-so-green decisions to make.

But don’t despair: there are a number of ways to minimize the carbon footprint of your wedding or event.

First of all, ditch the single-use cups, plates, and utensils. That much is obvious. But also think of ways to reduce waste before, during, and after the event: if you must make a purchase, be wary of over-packaging and of the origin of the products. Communicate information to guests via email rather than printed invitations. Most of all, try to borrow, rent, or reuse rather than buying new.

Make sure you make the most of your local vendors, especially when it comes to food. Nowadays, it’s easier than ever to find out where ingredients come from. Encourage local growers and suppliers, and, in turn, you’ll boost the local economy and reduce your event’s carbon footprint.
